I’m starting on a weird project – posting everything I eat and my BG levels – I figured I needed a place to write them down, and why not online? typeonefreedom.wordpress.com – we’ll see how long I keep this up.

Arrivederci, Muffin!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:17 am

So long, Muffin – it was nice knowin’ ya.

Davide Favaretto, the very nice guy from Venice who bought the Sea Muffin, has been here for 3 weeks getting her ready to leave. She now has a working SSB, a wind generator, a new main and asymmetrical spinnaker, and a working galley. She’s bare bones but functional.

And she’s gone.

Davide left this morning for the Azores. We wish him fair winds and following seas. It’s sad to see her go – she’s an awesome boat – but it’s great to know that she’s finally crossing oceans, like she was meant to.

Arrivederci, Muffin!

a1c test

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:58 pm

I got my first a1c test done since my diagnosis – it’s the test that shows what your average blood glucose has been over the last 3 months or so – and it was 6.0! Which is awesome. The ADA goal is to get it under 7, and my a1c when I first ended up in the hospital was a whopping 12.3 – so I am amazed that it’s gotten down so quickly.

My doctor and I talked some more about pumps, and we decided that if I was doing this well the old-fashioned way, it might be better to just not mess with things… so I’m going to stick with needles and finger pricking for now, as much of a pain as it is. I also had discussed pumps with my diabetes educator with regards to what would work on the trip, and she thought that a lower-tech solution might be smarter for distance cruising, since pump parts, etc. might be hard to come by. So needles and pins it is!

In other news, the Urs is learning to walk – she apparently started picking up pillows today to hold when she take a couple of steps – so she has something to crash on. Smart cookie, that girl.

Davide is getting ready to leave on the Muffin – I’m going to go see her tonight; can’t wait to see what he’s done with her. He still doesn’t have a dinghy, though, so I’m going to have to try and dig one up for him.
